VETiS

What is VET?

VET (Vocational Education and Training) provides hands-on practical training which provides students with work-ready skills for their career or qualifications to help towards their further education goals.

What is VETiS?
Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) describes courses that are completed by high school students as part of their VCE or VCAL. While optional in the VCE, VETiS is a core component of the VCAL program. These courses are undertaken at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

A wide variety of industries are available as VETiS programs including, building, engineering, hospitality, hair and beauty, community services, automotive and agriculture. Most VETiS students will complete a nationally recognised qualification at a Certificate II level. Many VETiS programs offer the completion of a recognised pre-apprenticeship program.
The VETiS program has been so successful that more than 95% of Australian secondary schools now offer VETiS programs to their students.*

How does VETiS contribute towards VCE?
Vocational Education and Training (VETiS) programs are fully recognised within the Unit 1-4 structure of the VCE and contribute towards the satisfactory completion of your VCE.

A number of VET programs also have a study score attached which contributes towards your ENTER score. Students who receive a Unit 3-4  sequence who study VETiS programs will be eligible for a 10 percent increment towards their ENTER (10 percent of the average of the primary four scaled studies) or a direct contribution through an external exam, just like other VCE studies.

How does VETiS contribute towards VCAL?
Within the VCAL certificate, VETiS programs satisfy the industry specific skills strand requirements. If a school student completes a full VETiS program (units 1-4) they should achieve 4 units of credit towards their VCAL certificate.

How can VETiS benefit students?
Students who enrol in VETiS not only develop new skills and knowledge, but may also earn credit towards nationally recognised qualifications. Through VETiS students can work towards a Certificate II or Certificate III qualification. Students may exit the course with a full qualification or a statement of attainment for the units they have successfully completed.

These qualifications and attainments can give a student a great head start, potentially increasing their employability by developing real work skills and providing pathways into employment or further education. Students who complete a pre-apprenticeship will have an advantage when applying for apprenticeships as they have already completed part of their compulsory training.
